WFMU Marathon 2012

February 28, 2012

I’ve been listening to WFMU a lot lately. My favorite show has to be Airborne Event with Dan Bodah.

For those who don’t know, it’s a user supported, independent ‘free form’ radio station. It plays absolutely anything and everything, all depending upon the DJ’s personal tastes.

Simply listening to the station has broadened my musical taste. It’s give me endless listening pleasure and I’m eternally grateful for it.

However, as I said, it’s user supported, meaning that all of the staff at WFMU are volunteers. Also, it doesn’t advertise so it has no money coming in from that. This is where the listeners come in to help.  They’re currently hosting their yearly Marathon which, in a nutshell, is a fundraiser for the station.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the amount of free (meaning the user doesn’t have to pay a price to use it, not that it doesn’t cost anything to make) media on the internet and the worries of what might happen if it starts to get a control placed on it. One of the best things about the Internet is the amount of free content you have available. Imagine if all of the things you use for free on a daily basis started to have a charge on them. It would be a ridiculous toll on creativity.

I think that’s why it is so important to support such a unique and inspiring outlet like WFMU. This is independence in it’s simplest form. It’s people doing things for the love of doing things, it’s the sort of things that needs our support.

Head over to the WFMU Marathon homepage.

I’ve personally done my part to help out and in return I’m getting some pretty good prizes from the station. It’s well worth it. It feels nice to put something back into the community!

So yeah, dig in your pockets and give a little back so that we can keep being given such quality entertainment!

Tell me this isn’t worth donating to.
